Endocrinology Research: Functions Performed By The Endocrine System

The hormones produced in the endocrine system are made specifically for a designated target that they meet after travelling in the bloodstream. The hormones are generally the message carriers who indicate what functions a specific organ is supposed to perform. An important factor associated with these hormones is that while they travel to their destinations, proteins of special kinds bind with them in order to specify the amount of interaction that is required to be done. All the functions are done corresponding to the level of interaction or reaction that the hormones succeed in doing. If the interaction is above or below the desired levels, the person is said to be suffering from harmonic imbalance.

The organs and the tissues which are to be targeted get stimulated only by specific type of hormones and show no reaction to the others. This is their way of maintaining balance. For the interaction to take place, both, the hormones and the target cells have to have the same receptors. Latching process takes place between the two ones the hormone reaches there and the transfer of the instructions (chemical in nature) takes place.

The amount of hormones secreted in the body is controlled by the inner mechanisms governing the body. Depending upon the kind of hormone, this can be the responsibility of a substance present in the blood stream or of the hormone itself. This regulation is important to keep the amount under tab and prevent from over or under production of the same. There is a specific level that has to be maintained at all times. As an example, take for instance the pituitary glands. They stimulate the production of the thyroid hormones by sensing their levels in the blood. Similarly, the calcium in the blood flow is regulated by the parathyroid hormones. It keeps a check on the blood calcium levels, increasing and decreasing it as per the required amounts.

The biggest misconception that the humans have is that it is they who control their behavior whereas it is the endocrine system that is doing it. All our moods, feelings are regulated by them. They play an instrumental role in the growth mechanism of the body. It may be a surprise to know that all the organs and tissues are actually connected to and governed by the endocrine system. The visible traits like the facial appearance etc. are an effect of the hormones secreted by this system. To add on to it, all our primary and secondary sexual characteristics result from their functioning.

The functions performed by the endocrine system are not abrupt but slow. They take their due course of time. Process like the growth of the human body and its development happens over a period of years. It is the nervous system that takes care of the more rapid processes of the body like the respiration and the motion of the body parts. In certain cases, both these systems work simultaneously and in synchronization to achieve the goals for the body.

In general, the endocrine system is in charge of body processes that happen slowly, such as cell growth. Faster processes like breathing and body movement are controlled by the nervous system. But even though the nervous system and endocrine system are separate syoften work together to help the body function properly.
